The Lürssen Group relies on MicroStep cutting systems to build maritime solutions
Beginning of steel cutting at leading shipbuilder with MicroStep technology
The long-established Fr. Lürssen Werft GmbH & Co. KG relies on MicroStep systems for bevel cutting, plasma cutting, oxyfuel cutting and more

The shipyards of the Lürssen Group have been building ships for national and international customers for over 130 years. Both naval ships and large luxury yachts are launched at the various locations. The yachts and naval ships are between 60 and over 150 m long. Depending on size and speed, the propulsion power is up to 30,000 kW. The maximum speeds achieved are over 50 knots. In order to meet these high demands of the ships also in terms of design, know-how at the highest level is already required when cutting the complex components. New in the machinery: a MicroStep plasma cutting machine with technology for bevel cutting (weld edge preparation).
The aim of the planned new acquisitions was to increase the output of the production with new equipment. After numerous discussions in the shipyard and extensive project planning work in advance, the way was paved for two systems with the partner MicroStep. On the one hand, a CNC plasma cutting machine SPL-PrI with the dimensions of 28,500 x 3,500mm works in parallel operation. On the flame cutting table, sheets are applied with weld edge preparations via the MicroStep rotator.
A HiFocus 360i plasma source with automatic gas console provides the necessary power. This system is complemented by a fully automatic inkjet marker
Directly opposite is an OxyCut PAI with 12,000 x 3,000 mm working area, a plasma support with a HiFocus 160i plasma source, also with automatic gas console, an oxyfuel torch and an inkjet marker. The nesting of the components is done by ALMA at Lürssen. This software is compatible with the MicroStep CNC systems and thus enables a smooth transition from the old systems to the new MicroStep overall concept. In order to maintain a clean workplace, it is also necessary to have an adequate exhaust system for the fumes produced during plasma cutting. For this purpose, MicroStep, together with its partner Donaldson, has converted the existing filter system to the new requirements and added a further filter system with a filter capacity of 16,000 m³/h.
The overall concept is rounded off by the first-class service of MicroStep Europa GmbH. This service is not only available to the Lürssen shipyard with advice and support. Thus the Fr. Lürssen shipyard as one of the leading shipyards worldwide has a reliable and strong partner at its side. We wish Fr. Lürssen Werft continued success and look forward to a very good cooperation!
