Metallbau Gruber relies on MicroStep's MG series
The family-owned company near Landshut stands for customized solutions in building construction. Since 2023, the metal fabrication shop has been relying on a multifunctional CNC cutting system from MicroStep's MG series. “The machine is really top-notch! I'm very satisfied,” says owner Erwin Gruber.

Machine profile:

MG
  • Working area 6,000 x 1,500 mm
  • Plasma rotator for weld preparation up to 52° with automatic calibrating unit
  • Oxy-fuel cutting
  • Drilling unit for drilling up to 40 mm and tapping up to M30
  • Pipe cutting device for processing pipes with a diameter of 30 to 300 mm and a length of 6,000 mm

Metallbau Gruber, a family-owned company in the northeast of Landshut, stands for fast, flexible and customized solutions in building construction – from stairs and railings to roofing. For sheet metal cutting, the metal construction company has been relying on a multifunctional CNC cutting system from MicroStep's MG series since 2023.

Started in 2019 as a one-man operation, Metallbau Gruber experienced significant growth as early as 2021, leading it to construct a new production and office building in Wörth an der Isar. Today, the company employs 19 people and offers a wide range of services: custom-made balconies, stairs, railings, canopies, fences, light wells, as well as girders, carports and pergolas. From measuring to installation, the Lower Bavarian company serves customers within a radius of about 100 kilometers – including mainly public clients such as a Munich-based residential construction company that has currently commissioned steelwork for 230 new residential units.

MicroStep technology is convincing all along the line

For several years, Metallbau Gruber worked with external cutting companies for cutting. A visit to Merkle Schweißtechnik in Landshut, a MicroStep dealer, finally brought about a change: Alois Bergmann (area sales manager at MicroStep Europa) presented the diverse portfolio of MicroStep CNC technologies to owner Erwin Gruber. “Until then, we had not yet seriously considered purchasing our own cutting system, but we wanted to be future-proof. Alois Bergmann convinced me completely. He knew a great deal that other salespeople often cannot answer,” reports Gruber. Convinced of the advantages of an investment in the area of cutting and after a brief comparison with another manufacturer, the choice was clear: a system from MicroStep's MG series. The configuration was individually tailored to the company's requirements in order to be optimally equipped for the future: a plasma rotator, oxyfuel support and a fully automatic drilling unit are included, as is a pipe cutting device for pipes with a diameter of up to 300 mm and a length of 6,000 mm.

Versatile use for in-house production and contract work

Since it was commissioned in May 2023, the system has been used in particular to cut stringers for stairs and railings made of steel and stainless steel with material thicknesses of up to 20 mm. In the future, Metallbau Gruber plans to utilize the machine even more – both for its own production and for contract orders from other companies. “The machine is really top-notch! I am very satisfied,” says Erwin Gruber enthusiastically.

OVERVIEW OF THE HIGHLIGHTS OF THE MG PLASMA CUTTING SYSTEM:

Flexible plasma cutting system for 3D processing of sheet metal and tubes

Metallbau Gruber invested in a flexible plasma cutting system of the MG series. The multifunctional cutting system is designed for the highest demands and long-term repeatability of precise results. The MicroStep Plasmarotator for 3D bevel cutting, e.g. for weld edge preparation up to 52°, was integrated The working area for sheets is 6,000 x 1,500 mm. A pipe cutting device of the type RSV 30-300 also enables the efficient processing of pipes and profiles with a diameter of 30 mm to 300 mm and a length of 6,000 mm using plasma technology MicroStep's patented automatic calibration unit ACTG® ensures permanently reliable and precise results. A powerful Kjellberg Q3000 with an automatic gas console and Contour Cut Speed technology is used as the plasma power source.

2D cutting of higher material thicknesses with fully automatic oxyfuel torch

In addition to the plasma rotator, the system also has an oxyfuel burner for 2D contours, even in thicker materials. The GCE® FIT+ model is used as the machine cutting torch, while the capacitive height control ensures the correct distance between the torch and the material.

Fully automatic drilling spindle for drill holes up to 40 mm in diameter and threads up to M3

The multifunctional system also includes a fully automatic drilling spindle. This powerful machining technology can be used to drill, tap and countersink holes in metal sheets. Drill holes from 4 to 40 mm in diameter and threads from M5 to M30 are possible. Tool calibration for consistently precise results is also performed using MicroStep's ACTG system. An automatic 8-station tool magazine is located on the gantry for efficient, fast tool changes.
